The Existential Crises of Consumer Culture (Theory): The Window of Anxiety
The confluence of crises we face, environmental, social, technological, health, and others, can aptly be described as “existential”: deep-cutting, all-encompassing and profoundly threatening. Consumer culture lies at the heart of many of these challenges, as a driving force, a potential salve, or a place where their effects are felt in our everyday lives.
The talk will introduce existential consumer culture theorizing (xCCT) as a response to the broader “meta crises” of neoliberal consumer culture and explore the untapped existential potential of CCT research. It will then focus on existential anxiety as a window into the challenges of contemporary consumer society and a springboard for new research avenues.
Seminar Series: Interpretive and Critical Business Studies (ICBS)
A series of seminars with a primarily qualitative focus, featuring both domestic and international researchers presenting their current research topics.
