National Holiday /May 1/ and Dean’s Day /May 2, 2025/

On Friday, May 2, all classes and office hours are cancelled due to Dean’s Day. The same applies for Thursday, May 1, which is Labour Day (a public holiday).

Labour Day is an annual day of celebration of the labour movement and its achievements. It has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

In most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May, originally chosen to commemorate the 1886 general strike which culminated in the Haymarket affair.

It was first celebrated in the Czech lands in 1890 on Střelecký ostrov in Prague.

For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country. Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries.
