Management Summary Reserach Study “A Typology of Circular Economy Startups in Agri-Food Supply Chains: An Analysis of 79 Innovative Startups”

The transition of the agri-food sector to a circular economy is crucial for sustainability, and startups play a vital role in it. This research paper analyzes 79 European circular startups to create a clear typology that helps investors, companies, and policymakers navigate this landscape.

Based on the analysis, the startups were divided into three main groups. The first is biotech-driven sustainable producers, which focus on the initial stages of the supply chain. Using biotechnology, they transform waste into new, high-value products like animal feed or cosmetic ingredients, primarily targeting the B2B market.

The second type is digital CE enablers. These players leverage digital platforms and artificial intelligence to reduce waste across the entire supply chain, thereby increasing efficiency and transparency.

The third category consists of circular packaging pioneers, who specialize in innovations that eliminate single-use packaging. Through reuse systems supported by digital and mechanical technologies, they offer solutions for both B2B and B2C segments.

The resulting typology provides a valuable framework for understanding this dynamic ecosystem. It allows for better identification of investment opportunities, the formation of strategic partnerships, and targeted support for innovations that contribute to a more sustainable food industry.
