New ERRL’s Teaching Scenario – When Home Becomes the Office

Teaching Scenario V5, Home Office Environment (When Home Becomes the Office), is a new VR lesson that starts with a short narrated mini lecture with slides, delivered through an upgraded avatar lecturer, and then drops you into a realistic home office where the teaching point becomes something you feel. After the intro, you find a notepad on the desk with three priorities you need to keep in mind. Then the “work” part begins and distractions build up over time, phone alerts, background noise, and annoying glare from the environment. You can respond in simple, natural ways through upgraded interaction methods: pick up and inspect desk objects, use the headphones to dial down surrounding noise, check the phone, move props around, and generally try to stay focused while the room tries to pull your attention away. At the end, you answer a quick memory question and the session closes, with the whole run logged automatically, including timing, interactions, distraction events, and your final answer.

The showcase goal is to demonstrate a clean, repeatable format that combines teaching and research in one smooth experience. It shows how an avatar-led explanation can transition into an interactive situation that looks and feels like real remote work, while still staying structured enough for experiments and comparisons across participants. In other words, it is a practical template for studying attention, coping strategies, and memory under everyday interruptions, and for showing what ERRL can do when “lecture” turns into “experience.” This scenario was developed by Leire Cartagena and Marko Orel.
