We’re putting together a European network of laboratories for advanced virtual immersion and experimental research!

LAVIER: Laboratories for Advanced Virtual Immersion and Experiential Research

LAVIER aims to be a European network designed to support academic research through the use of XR (extended reality) technologies, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. This initiative unites VR labs across Europe, creating a collaborative ecosystem that accelerates innovation and knowledge exchange in the rapidly evolving field of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. With the aim of connecting researchers, developers, and experts from diverse academic disciplines, LAVIER seeks to push the boundaries of XR applications and methodologies across various fields of study.

Key Outputs:

  1. Interdisciplinary research and methodologies

  2. Collaborative projects and publications spanning multiple academic domains

  3. Open-source XR tools and frameworks for academic research

  4. Regular workshops and conferences promoting cross-disciplinary dialogue

  5. Student and researcher exchange across disciplines and institutions

Ideated Goals:

  1. Foster cross-pollination of ideas between disparate academic fields through XR-enabled collaboration

  2. Develop novel research methodologies that leverage XR technologies to address complex, multifaceted academic questions

  3. Create a shared repository of XR tools and best practices tailored for various academic disciplines

  4. Establish guidelines for the ethical use of XR in research, particularly concerning human subjects and data privacy

  5. Integrate XR technologies into curriculum development across different academic programs, enhancing interdisciplinary learning experiences

  6. Facilitate the translation of academic XR research into real-world applications and policy recommendations

  7. Organize annual interdisciplinary XR symposia to showcase innovative research and foster networking among European academics

The goal of LAVIER is to use XR technology to a) let scholars look at complex issues from many angles by removing the usual boundaries between disciplines and b) interconnect similar networks across Europe to support collaboration and knowledge transition.
