VR Talks No. 1 / Mika Johnson – “Transmission of Reality in VR: From Technology to Ecology”

VR Talks No. 1 will take place at the ERRL Laboratory (room SB126) on 20 May 2026 at 16:00. Our guest speaker, Mika Johnson, will present “Transmission of Reality in VR: From Technology to Ecology”, a talk that moves from the technical conditions of immersion to the deeper question of how “reality” is transmitted, constructed, and perceived in virtual environments. The session will connect VR technology with ecology and perception, and it will also show how art and storytelling can operate as practical methods for shaping social imagination in immersive media.

Mika Johnson is a filmmaker, multimedia artist, and educator working across film, virtual reality, and immersive installation, and he is the CEO and co-founder of Experience Aika, an interdisciplinary studio linking artistic research, ecology, and experiential design. His portfolio includes large-scale immersive installations such as The Infinite Library and The Republic of Dreams, and his VR work also includes VRwandlung, a virtual reality adaptation of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. The talk will make a clear case for VR as both a powerful technological tool and a serious medium, relevant for those who want to understand how immersive experiences can be designed, interpreted, and used with intent across research, teaching, and practice.
