Contents of Study

The standard duration of accredited doctoral programs is 3 years, while the maximum duration is 5 years. Doctoral students follow an individual study plan prepared under the guidance of their supervisors at the beginning of their study.

First part of PhD studies consists mainly of passing successfully at least five subjects in a given area of study. Students must in the first year of their study complete all the required subjects.

FBA offers two fields of study:

  • Business Economics and Management,
  • Economics.

Subjects compulsory for both fields:

  • Economics (microeconomics-macroeconomics): The course explains current theories of the consumer and firm on the advance level. It cultivates the student knowledge about theory of the firm and consumer and it provides tools for the analysis firms decision process in the concrete market situations, incl. Czech economy conditions and the process of the globalization.
  • Research Methods for Managers: The aim of the course is make students acquainted with the procedures and instruments of scientific work. The student should be able to define the objective and purpose of the thesis, problems that will work to address, formulate hypotheses and assumptions on which work will be built and to define the scientific method to be followed. A significant part of the work consists of scientific knowledge and work with information sources, particularly the ability to formulate a search query.

Branch compulsory subjects: Doctoral student chooses one of the two subjects on recommendation of a supervisor and according to his/her specialisation.

  • Statistical Methods for Scientific Research: The course acquaints with operations during the data gathering, manipulation and analysis. It focuses on exploratory data analysis, both univariate and multivariate methods, manipulations with outlier and extreme values and the ways of results interpretation.
  • Quantitative Instruments for Economic Analysis: The purpose of the course is to provide students with topical quantitative models and methods for economic analysis. The course is devoted for students of all faculties except of faculty of informatics and statistics.

Branch compulsory subjects for the field Business Economics and Management: Doctoral student chooses one of the two subjects on recommendation of a supervisor and according to his/her specialisation.

  • Business Economics: The course focuses on developing strategic thinking of students through the study of key seminal papers that outline the strategy domain as an important research area of the organizational behaviour in the marketplace. Selected papers follow the process, content and contextual dimension of strategy, always in relation to tackling a certain strategic problem.
  • Management for the future: The main interest is in corporations and their work in future environment and work of managers who will be responsible for them. Viewpoints on development of information (knowledge) society are presented, followed by analysis of corporations which will operate in this area (with use of approach of different authors).
  • Consumer behaviour: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: characterise and explain significant relations between marketing and consumer behaviour, evaluate structure of consumer behaviour and their impacts into the marketing approach, determine significant marketing trends in their relation to consumer behaviour, investigate the inputs of consumer behaviour into marketing by relevant analytical methods and databases systems.

Branch compulsory subject for the field Economics.

  • Dynamic Models in Economics: This mandatory course is focused on advanced economic models in the fields of portfolio theory, asset prices and interest rates modelling, exchange rates and balance of payments and monetary economics with the emphasis on a small open economy.

From the second year of PhD. study, the focus is given on conducting own research under the supervison of appointed dissertation thesis supervisor, presenting at conferences, writing research papers and finally a dissertation. See section Study Requirements for more details.
